Riverside—The bottom seemed to have fallen out of UC Riverside’s men’s soccer program in 2009.
Coach Junior Gonzalez recalls that he was pretty optimistic going into that season, his sixth as the program’s head coach. But four players he’d expected to be significant were instead academically ineligible. The Highlanders then went out and finished 1-16-1, including an 0-9-1 record in the Big West. They scored 12 goals in 18 games and were shut out 10 times, including six 1-0 losses.
