The 49ers (9-8, 2-3) scored a bucket with 32 seconds remaining in the game to cut the Highlanders lead to one, 48-47. Nottingham was then fouled and hit 1-of-2 from the foul line with 25 seconds left as the lead went to 49-47. Devin Hudson then connected a layup with six seconds remaining for the Beach to tie the score at 49, with both teams out of timeouts.
Nottingham quickly came up the floor, and with two seconds left found herself at the free throw line following a Hudson foul. The senior guard hit the first shot, but saw the second clank around the rim and out. The 49ers got the rebound, but did not have time to get down the floor as time expired, giving the Highlanders the 50-49 victory.
Nottingham led all players with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Brittany Crain added 13 points and Janelle Kearney had eight. Hudson led the 49ers with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
In the first period, both baskets had a lid on them early as the teams were a combined 0-for-8 from the floor after three minutes of play. Crain's jumper at the 16:43 mark put the Highlanders on board, but the offensive struggles continued as the teams were 2-for-20 from the field with 11:52 left in the half.
The 49ers then found their stride, hitting four of the next eight shots to open a 17-5 lead at the 7:53 mark. UC Riverside responded as Nottingham scored six straight as the advantage was cut to eight, 19-11, with 6:13 remaining in the period.
LBSU scored the next five points as the lead went back to double-digits, 24-11, but four straight layups by the Highlanders closed the margin to 24-19 at the 2:18 mark.
A Nottingham three-pointer with 14 seconds left made it just a two-point deficit, 26-24, as that score held up entering the half. The Highlanders closed out the period on a 13-2 run, hitting 5-of-10 from the field during that span. Nottingham's 12 points and eight rebounds led all players in the period.
