Women's Basketball Falls To League-Leading Pacific, 85-56
1/24/2013 7:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Box Score—Pacific 85, UC Riverside 56
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team looked to continue its winning streak in Big West play Thursday evening, but weak defense led them to an 85-56 loss against league-leading Pacific at the SRC Arena.
The Highlanders fall to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play, while the Tigers improve to 15-3, 5-1.
The Tigers led wire to wire throughout the game, but it was close in the early going as their lead never grew past five points until they went hot from downtown, and opened a 17-10 lead at the 8:46 mark. The Highlanders battled back scoring 11 of the next 15 points to tie the game at 21, capped off by a pair of Brittany Crain free throws with 5:48 left in the half.
However, Pacific took their lead back quickly with a 15-2 run to close the first period, and entered the break up 36-23.
Pacific continued strong with a 14-2 run to start the second half and the Highlanders were unable to catch up. Trailing by much as a 32 points, UCR lacked strong defense and was unable to hold Pacific from behind the arc. Erica McKenzie posted three three-pointers in just four minutes, followed by two three-pointers from teammate Claire Conricode, only a minute apart. For the half, the Tigers hit 5-of-11 from beyond the arc.
UCR hit 31.5 percent from the field for the game, but just 27.3 percent from behind the arc. Pacific shot 45.7 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from the outside.
Natasha Hadley was the high scorer for the Highlanders with 14 points, while Chelsea Jacoby added a career-high nine. Four players scored in double-figures for Pacific led by 14 from Kendall Rodriguez and McKenzie.
The Highlanders remain at home this weekend to play UC Davis on Saturday, January 26 at 7 pm PT at the SRC Arena.
