UC Davis Earns 61-49 Victory Over UCR Women's Basketball

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team returned to Big West Conference action Saturday afternoon, dropping a 61-49 decision to UC Davis at the SRC Arena.
Natasha Hadley led the Highlanders (9-9, 2-5) with 15 points while Brittany Crain added 12, and Janelle Keaney grabbed 10 rebounds. Sydnee Fipps led the Aggies (8-10, 3-4) with 23 points.
Only three players scored for the Highlanders in the first half, as Crain had all 12 of her points in the period. UC Davis led from the get-go and used a high buzz defense to force 10 UCR turnovers.
With UC Davis leading 22-13 with 6:54 left in the half, the Highlanders put on a spurt, scoring seven of the next nine points to get within four, 24-20, at the 3:17 mark.
The Aggies called timeout and responded with a 5-0 run and seven of the next nine points to open a double-figure advantage, 31-21, with 1:40 remaining. UC Riverside held UC Davis without a score over the next minute and a half, however, and added two more buckets to enter the break trailing at just two possessions, 31-25.
The Highlanders cut UCD's lead to three on two occasions early in the second half, the last at 37-34 following a Hadley jumper with 13:52 to go. The Aggies then scored five straight en route to an 18-2 run that opened up the game, 51-36, with just under seven minutes remaining.
UC Riverside never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way as UC Davis went on for the win.
UCR hit 35.8 percent of their shots from the field but just 9.1 percent from beyond the arc, while the Aggies connected on 44.2 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from downtown. The Highlanders out-rebounded UCD, 35-28, and had 15 second chance points compared to only eight for the Aggies.
The Highlanders now hit the road for a pair of Big West games beginning on Thursday, January 31 at UC Santa Barbara and on Saturday, February 2 at Cal Poly.
