Men's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision To UC Santa Barbara
10/7/2013 9:07:00 AM | Men's Soccer
Santa Barbara, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team was looking to rebound, Sunday, from a 5-1, conference-opening loss to Cal Poly, but UC Santa Barbara had other ideas as the Gauchos shutout the visiting Highlanders 2-0 (Box Score)
UCSB put the Highlanders (5-4-2, 0-2-0) back on their heels early as Goffin Boyoko flicked a pass to Achille Campion scoring the Gauchos first goal with only 37 seconds off the clock. Undeterred, UC Riverside won the shots on goal battle on the day, 5-3, but UCSB (7-4-0. 2-0-0) keeper Josh McNeely saved all five en route to his fourth shutout of the season.
As the match progressed, it became increasingly physical as the referee handed out nine yellow cards on the day, including six in the second period.
UC Riverside goalkeeper Ashkan Khosravi, making his first start of the season after working his way back from an offseason injury, faced just two more shots on goal after Campion's initial score, but the Gauchos' final shot on goal came following a UCR turnover in which Ismaila Jome arched the ball to the left post to put UCSB up 2-0.
The loss is the fourth in a row for the Highlanders who started the season with a 5-0-2 mark. UC Riverside returns home this weekend where the Highlanders will take on Sacramento State on Friday, October 11 at 7 pm PT and UC Davis on Sunday, October 13 at 2 pm.
