San Jose, CA—Molon labe, in Ancient Greek, means "come and take." Well, the UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team certainly did on Friday evening, scoring the most points in its Division I history while picking up its first victory of the 2013-14 season, 105-74 at San Jose State. The Highlanders shot 54.5 percent from the field as four players scored in double-figures led by 23 from Brittany Crain. (Box Score)
Natasha Hadley added a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds while Annelise Ito scored a career-high 20 points while grabbing a personal-best 15 boards. Kiara Harewood completed the quartet of double-digit scorers with 12 points and eight rebounds.
The 105 points scored by the Highlanders is the most in a win in 20 years since the squad totaled 106 against Cal State Stanislaus on December 4, 1993.
The Highlanders came out of the gate strong in the first half scoring 11 straight points in under three minutes. At the first media timeout, UCR led 13-2 and enjoyed 46.2 percent shooting while limiting the Spartans to just 12.5 percent.
The Highlanders continued their offensive outburst, scoring the next four straight as the lead reached 15, 17-2, at the 15:08 mark. SJSU countered with a 4-0 run of its own, but the Highlanders kept their lead between 12 and 14 until they turned a 24-12 advantage into a 30-12 margin.
The Spartans made it a 15-point game wih 8:40 to go in the half, but UC Riverside reached the 20-point plateau, 37-16, following jumpers from Ito, Hadley, and a layup from Akilah Martin two minutes later. The lead reached as high as 23, 43-20, with 4:51 remaining in the half, but a 10-2 run by San Jose State again cut it to 15, 45-30, with just under two minutes to go.
The Highlanders closed out the period on a 5-0 run, as a Taylor Wallace layup and an Ito three-point play gave UCR a 50-30 lead entering the break. Ito recorded a double-double in the first half alone, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the team.
The Highlanders hit 6-of-8 from the field to open the second half as the lead grew to 27, 66-39, at the 14:46 mark. UCR then pushed it to 30 on two occasions, the last at 77-47 with 11:23 remaining.
The Spartans countered with a 6-0 run over the next minute of play, and scored 12 of 15 to cut the margin to 21, 80-59, with 8:43 to go. Both squads traded buckets until SJSU made it a 19-point game on three occasions, the last at 91-72 with just under five minutes to go.
UC Riverside made a push at the end, however, closing out the game on a 14-2 run to secure its 31-point win.
The Spartans entered the game averaging 98.5 points, but UCR's defense limited them to just 74 points and 36.8 percent shooting, including just 14.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Highlanders also dominated the boards, grabbing 51 rebounds compared to just 31 for SJSU.
Next up for UC Riverside is a Sunday, November 17 contest at Santa Clara starting at 2 pm PT in Santa Clara, CA.
