Riverside—The three-day UCR BMW of Riverside Gary McCord Golf Challenge got underway Saturday evening with more than 200 guests attending the tee-off dinner at BMW of Riverside (View the Photo Gallery).
The UCR Pipe Band got the festivities underway as the Highlanders and their fans dined on heavy hors d'oeuvres and bid on three silent auction items—a UC Riverside Athletics branded fender stratocaster, a coaching clinic with the Highlanders coach of their choice, and a Brendan Steele experiential package which includes hospitality and tickets to a 2014 PGA Tour event.
Interim Athletics Director Jim Wooldridge presented BMW of Riverside General Manager Tom Naso with a UC Riverside golf bag quipping that although the bag wouldn't help him play better "it would make him look better out on the course."
Women's Basketball player Natasha Hadley and former UC Riverside baseball player-turned Hollywood actor Stephen Bishop both spoke about what an athletics scholarship meant for them as they pursued their goals in the athletics arena and in life.
Chancellor Kim Wilcox closed the evening by stressing the synergy between the university's mission and the athletics department's mission in bringing together the best employees, staff members and facilities to create the best possible educational experience for our students.
Round one of the UCR BMW of Riverside Gary McCord Golf Challenge gets underway Sunday at Canyon Crest Country Club, with Round two taking place on Monday at Victoria Club. All funds raised throughout the three-day event go towards scholarships for UC Riverside student-athletes.
