Box Score - UTEP 5, UC Riverside 3
Fresno, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team concluded play at the Fresno State Kickoff Tournament Sunday morning with a 5-3 loss to UTEP.
The Highlanders (2-3) had a 2-1 lead after two innings, and a 3-1 lead following four and a half, but the Miners scored two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to earn the victory.
Ariel Shore got things started offensively for the Highlanders, scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning to make it 1-0. Kayla White hit an RBI single up the middle in the second inning, scoring Melissa Escalante to put UCR on top 2-0.
UTEP scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead in half, 2-1, but UC Riverside got that run back with a single run in the top of the fifth, increasing the advantage to 3-1.
The Miners had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, and a single to left field scored two runners, tying the game at 3-3. An inning later, Texas El Paso put two more runs on the board, taking a 5-3 advantage.
UC Riverside had one more chance to tie or take the lead, and had runners at the corners with two outs in the top of the seventh. Unfortunately, an infield pop up ended the game, leaving the Miners in possession of the 5-3 victory.
Escalante finished with three hits, one run and one RBI to lead the Highlanders.
UC Riverside now returns to Southern California to play in the Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State on February 15-17 in San Diego, CA.
