
Men's Basketball's Rally Comes Up Short At Long Beach State

Long Beach State, CA—UC Riverside used a team-high of 19 points from senior Larry Cunningham to get within four points in the final minute but Long Beach was able to hold off the Highlander rally and pick up the 56-46 Big West victory down in Long Beach, CA Wednesday night.
UCR falls to 5-16 overall and 2-8 in the Big West after experiencing a tough shooting night only getting 14-of-42 (33.3%) shots to fall while playing in the first game in 11 days. The Highlanders won the battle on the boards 32-30 but was unable to answer the outside shooting by the 49ers (6-17, 3-8 Big West) who knocked down 10 from long distance, five more than UCR.
Long Beach led throughout the game opening up leads in the double digits throughout the first half before a couple free-throws by sophomore Sean Cunningham and a three by freshman Jalonni Diggs cut the LBSU lead to 22-16 in the final seconds. Greg Plater would answer for the 49ers though, by hitting a three the following possesion to open the lead back up to 25-16 at the break.
The teams came out in the second half starting to make more of their shots. UCR would stay within single digits of the 49ers for most of the second half before closing the gap to 47-43 on a Larry Cunningham's three with 1:11 remaining. LBSU would again answer the Highlander rally, knocking down 9 of their final 10 free-throw attempts to pick up the victory.
Junior Aaron Scott finished with nine points and a team-high of eight rebounds in support of Larry Cunningham. LBSU was led by Donovan Morris who finished with a game-high 26 points after receiving 16 trips to the charity stripe and made 15 of those attempts.
UCR continues on the road with a stop at first place Cal State Northridge on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
