Men's Tennis Outlasts Northern Arizona, 4-3, In Victory

Scottsdale, AZ - The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team won a hard-fought 4-3 battle against Northern Arizona Saturday morning by winning the doubles point and splitting the singles matches.
"We had an outstanding effort despite very windy conditions," Head Coach Tim Downey explained. "The team has been making great strides in doubles the last three matches."
Calvin Ngo and Julian Ruffin made quick work of their opponents at number three doubles, 8-1, and UCR capped off the point as Simon Peters and Jimmy Roberts won 8-5 at number one. The doubles match at #2 went unfinished once the Highlanders had earned the point.
In singles, UCR needed a split, and got one as Ruffin, Ngo, and Marcus Vizcarra all came through with victories.
After dropping his first set, Ruffin defeated Dominic Bermudez at number three, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. The reverse happened with Ngo at number five, as he won his first set 7-6, but lost 1-6 in the second before rallying for a 6-2 win in the third. Finally, Vizcarra won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 over Alan Barrios at #6.
"I'm very proud of the team effort," Downey continued. "It was a well-earned victory for UCR."
The Highlanders remain in Arizona to face the University of Arizona on Sunday at 11 am.
