2/9/2013 1:11:00 PM | Softball
Box Score - UC Riverside 2, Sacramento State 1
Fresno, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team continued play Saturday morning at the Fresno State Kickoff Tournament, defeating Sacramento State 2-1 to improve to 2-1 on the young season.
The Hornets (2-1) got on board first, scoring one unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the second inning for a 1-0 lead.
UCR responded in the top half of the next inning, plating two runs, also with two outs, to take a 2-1 advantage. With Nicollete Lujan on second base, Alexis Pickett hit an RBI single to bring her home. Ashley Ercolano then singled up the middle, scoring Pickett and putting the Highlanders on top.
Sacramento State threatened in the sixth inning with two outs and the bases loaded, but the lead runner was called out at home, caught stealing, to end the inning. The Highlanders allowed a baserunner in the bottom of the seventh due to a fielding error, but it did not prove costly as UCR got out of the inning unscathed, holding on for the 2-1 victory.
Alyssa Razo earned the win for UC Riverside, giving up five hits and one unearned run in seven innings. Natalie Sanchez led the Highlanders with two hits while seven other players recorded one hit apiece.
Next up for UCR is a 3:45 pm contest against UTEP on Saturday in game four of the Fresno State Kickoff Tournament.
