Errors Prove Costly As Softball Falls To UTEP, 9-1

Fresno, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team (2-2) committed four errors Saturday evening as UTEP won 9-1 in six innings due to the eight run mercy rule in game four of the Fresno State Kickoff Tournament.
UTEP (1-2) scored a single run in the top of the first inning, but Kayla White blasted a home run to lead off the bottom of the first as the Highlanders tied the game at 1-1.
The Miners built upon their lead, though, scoring two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, and three in the sixth to go up 9-1. All three runs scored by UTEP in the fifth were unearned, as the Highlanders committed two errors during the course of the inning.
The Highlanders got a baserunner on in the bottom of the sixth, but could not plate a run as the Miners won in six innings.
Taylor Alvarez was saddled with the loss for UC Riverside, giving up three runs and six hits in 3.2 innings of work.
The Highlanders conclude the Fresno State Kickoff Tournament Sunday morning with another game against UTEP at 9 am PT.
