Softball Drops Big West Conference Opener At Pacific, 6-1 And 6-2

Stockton, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team opened the Big West Conference portion of its schedule Saturday with a doubleheader loss at Pacific, 6-1 and 6-2.
In the first game, the Highlanders (15-17, 0-2) struck first scoring a single run in the second inning. Kayla White doubled to lead off the frame, and after stealing third, scored on Natalie Sachez' single down the right field line.
UCR's lead was short-lived, however, as the Tigers scored two in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Back-to-back hits to lead off the inning put runners on, and Nicole Zapotoczny laced a double to centerfield to plate both runners.
Pacific added three insurance runs in the third and a solo run in the fourth to go up 6-1. The Tigers pitching staff also proved effective as the Highlanders had just two baserunners on in the last four innings.
Tori Shepard earned the win in the circle for UOP while Alyssa Razo was saddled with the loss.
In the second game, UC Riverside again got on the board first. With two outs and Ariel Shore on second base, Alexis Pickett singled up the middle to put the Highlanders up 1-0 in the first inning.
The Tigers countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to go up 2-1, but the Highlanders tied the game the next inning as Marissa Escalante scored an unearned run from a Pacific error. UOP went on 3-2 in the third, and added a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to lead 6-2.
The Highlanders had opportunites in the sixth and seventh but left three runners on base, and the Tigers defense got out of both innings to hold on for the win.
Ashley Ercolano took the loss for UCR giving up five earned runs in six innings.
The three-game series concludes on Sunday with a single game beginning at 12 pm PT in Stockton.
