Boudreau's Two-Run Homer Helps Baseball To 4-3 Win Over #21 UC Irvine

Riverside-The UC Riverside Baseball Team committed three errors Thursday evening leading to three unearned Anteaters runs, but Kyle Boudreau drilled a two-run homer to right center in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, and the Highlanders picked up an unearned run of their own in the seventh to secure a 4-3 win over 21st ranked UC Irvine (Box Score/Highlight Video).
UC Riverside starter Dylan Stuart (3-2) retired the first two UC Irvine batters in the top of the first, but Connor Spencer reached base with a two-out single up the middle, and moved into scoring position following a balk. Ronnie Shaefer then hit what should have been an inning-ending grounder to shortstop Joe Chavez, but the ball found its way between Chavez’s legs, and Spencer came around to score.
The Highlanders got the run back in the bottom of the first as Devyn Bolasky led off the inning with a flare to left, and Chavez reached on a bunt single. Chavez was erased one batter later on a pick off, but David Andriese tied the score ripping a triple to right center that brought Bolasky home.
Neither team scored in the second, but in the top of the third, Dominique Taylor reached on a single to center, and Grant Palmer reached on an error by Stuart as he tried to sacrifice Taylor to second. Instead, Taylor advanced to third on the play and scored when Spencer lifted a sac fly to center field.
The Anteaters third run also came courtesy of an error. Jonathan Herkins reached base with one out in the fourth on a bunt single, but another errant throw by Stuart on the play allowed him to advance to second. One batter later, Taylor singled to left to put UC Irvine up 3-1.
The lead didn’t last long however, as Kyle Boudreau tied the game with one swing of the bat lifting a 3-2 Andrew Thurman offering over the right center field wall scoring Phil Holinsworth.
It remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Bart Steponovich beat out an infield single and Cody Hough drew a walk. That ended Thurman's night as he was replaced by Mitch Merten. Bolasky tried to sacrifice both runners up 90 feet, but the Anteaters were able to get the lead runner on the play. Chavez then hit what could have been an inning-ending double play, but Grant Palmer's relay throw was off the mark. That allowed Hough to scamper home with what would prove to be the game-winning run.
Trevor Frank came on in relief with two outs in the top of the eighth, recording the final four outs for his fourth save of the season.
The Highlanders and Anteaters play game two of their three-game series on Friday beginning at 6 pm PT.
