Albuquerque, NM—The UC Riverside Baseball Team built a 6-0 lead against New Mexico Friday evening, but the Lobos battled back snapping the Highlanders four-game winning streak with an 11-9 come-from-beind victory (Box Score).
The Highlanders jumped on Lobos starter A.J. Carman early and often sending 11 batters to the plate in a five-run first. David Andriese, Phil Holinsworth and Joe Chavez each drove in a run during the inning, while Bart Steponovich chipped in with a two-run single.
After UC Riverside starter Dylan Stuart worked a scoreless bottom of the inning, Holinsworth drove in his second run of the day with a single to right in the second that scored Andriese. That gave the Highlanders a six-run cushion, and UCR appeared well on its way to the its fifth straight win of the season. But New Mexico touched Stuart for three hits and four runs in the bottom of the third to cut the UCR lead in half.
The Highlanders chased Carman in the top of the third as UC Riverside put runners on the corners with one out. Alex Estrella came on in relief and immediately walked Eddie Young to load the bases. Kyle Boudreau's infield single score Nick Vilter, and Clayton Prestridge's line out to right scored Chavez putting UCR up 8-3.
The Lobos scored another run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-4 Highlanders, and put the first four batters on in the fifth to cut the UCR lead to three, ending Stuart's day.
Mark Garcia (2-2) got the call from the bullpen, entering the game with the bases loaded and nobody out. Alex Allbritton promptly singled down the right field line scoring two and tying the game.
Garcia got out of the inning without any additional damage, and the Highlanders went back on top in the very next half inning as Prestridge scored on a Vilter sac fly in the top of the sixth.
UC Riverside would manage just one more hit over the final three innings, however, and D.J. Peterson's solo homer to left to lead off the bottom of the eighth tied the game, The Lobos weren't done scoring as Mitch Garver singled to left, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Luke Campbell then doubled down the left field line to give New Mexico its first lead of the game. One batter later, Sam Haggerty ripped his own double to left for the final margin of victory.
Four Lobos pitchers combined to allow just five hits and one run over the final 6.2 innings of play. Gabe Aguilar (1-0) was credited with the win, and Josh Walker picked up his first save of the year throwing a scoreless ninth. Garcia was saddled with the loss.
Prestridge reached base twice in the game, but was not credited with a base hit ending his season-opening hitting streak at 12 games.
The Highlanders and Lobos play a double header Saturday with first pitch for game one slated for 1 pm PT.
