Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team ran its home winning streak to nine in a row Friday evening with a dramatic, 6-5, come-from-behind victory over the Pacific Tigers (Box Score/Highlight Video).
The Highlanders are undefeated at home this season, but they needed five runs in the last three innings last night to complete their eighth straight come-from-behind win at The Plex.
Trailing 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, UC Riverside (15-14, 4-3) put together a two-out rally when pinch-hitter Francisco Tellez laced a two-out triple to center off of Tigers (9-19, 2-5) reliever Mike Hager. Joe Chavez then beat out a bunt single to score Tellez to make it a 4-2 ballgame.
UCR starter Dylan Stuart retired the side in order in the top of the eighth to keep the game within reach, and in the bottom of the eighth, the Highlanders offense struck again. Devyn Bolasky singled up the middle to start the inning, and one batter later a David Andriese single to left center moved him to second. Phil Holinsworth followed with a single of his own to left center scoring Bolasky and cutting the Pacific lead to one. Kyle Boudreau pinch hit for Kevin Davidson with runners on first and third, and his fielder's choice tied the game at four.
Stuart retired the first batter in the top of the ninth, but gave up a single to Jason Taasaas, giving way to closer Trevor Frank (4-0). Pinch hitter Taylor Murphy hit a grounder to second that should have been the second out of the inning, but Nick Vilter couldn't come up with it, advancing Taasaas to third and allowing Murphy to move to second.
JJ Wagner then followed with a grounder up the middle scoring Taasaas with the go-ahead run. Frank got Tyler Sullivan to pop out to short to end the inning, leaving the Highlanders in need of some ninth-inning magic.
Kevin Hammann (2-2) took over on the mound to start the bottom of the ninth, and he retired pinch hitter Robby Witt on a ground out to second for the first out of the inning. He then plunked Francisco Tellez on a 1-0 pitch, before allowing a Joe Chavez single through the left side. Bolasky lined out to center for the second out of the inning, and the highlanders were down to their last out.
Hammann got two strikes on Clayton Prestridge, before the senior beat out a high chopper to load the bases. Andriese was up next, and Hammann once again got two strikes on the batter before allowing another infield single that tied the score.
That brought Holinsworth to the plate, and he ripped Hammann's second offering up the middle bringing Chavez home with the game-winning run.
The Highlanders and Tigers play game two of their three-game series on Saturday beginning at 6 pm PT.
