4/20/2013 6:10:00 PM | Men's Tennis
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team lost a 7-0 match to UC Davis Saturday afternoon at Andulka Park in Big West Conference action.
The Aggies took the doubles point by winning matches at numbers one and three. UCR's #2 duo of Kevin Griffin and Julian Ruffin earned an 8-6 win to deny UC Davis the doubles sweep.
In singles, Luis Gastao won his first set 6-1 before falling 6-1, 6-2 to Kyle Miller at number two. The other singles contests were all close as Jimmy Roberts, Ruffin, and Calvin Ngo each lost a set by a 7-6 score, while Marcus Vizcarra likewise dropped a 7-5 first set.
In the end, though, the Aggies won in straight sets in the five remaining matches to earn the overall 7-0 sweep.
"It was a disappointing day on the whole," Head Coach Tim Downey stated. "But a bright spot was Griffin and Ruffin getting their first doubles win together.
"The heat played a factor unfortunately for us as well. We really felt we had a good shot at victory but UCD played consistently throughout."
The Highlanders now host Pacific in their regular season finale Sunday at noon at Andulka Park.
