Softball Splits Doubleheader with UC Davis, 8-5 and 3-1

Riverside—The UC Riverside Softball team split a doubleheader against UC Davis Saturday, winning 8-5 in game one before falling 3-1 in the rubber match. The victory is the first Big West Conference win of the season for the Highlanders, who improve to 17-27 overall on the year.
In game one, UCR plated three in the first, one in the third and fourth in the fourth.
After retiring the side in the top of the first inning, UCR starting pitcher Ashley Ercolano came to the plate in the bottom of the inning to help her own cause. With a runner on second and two outs, Ercolano drilled a home run over the fence in left center to put the Highlanders up 2-0. UC Riverside extended their lead when Marissa Escalante tripled to right center to bring in Alexis Pickett who previously reached on a walk.
Kelly Schulze homered to left center for UC Davis to open the second inning. Back to back singles and a fielder’s choice then loaded the bases for Krista Bava who doubled to left center to bring two across and tie the game for the Aggies. After a pitching change by the Highlanders, UC Davis took the lead on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chandler Wagner, which brought in the runner at third to make it a 4-3 ballgame.
Nicolette Lujan, Dionne Anderson and Ariel Shore loaded the bases for Kayla White and UCR in the bottom of the second. White’s fielder’s choice ground ball allowed Lujan to score from third and tie the game for the Highlanders, 4-4.
UC Riverside continued its offense in the fourth, opening up a four-run lead over the Aggies. Singles by Lujan and Anderson put two runners on for White, who singled up the middle to plate both runners. Eroclano joined White on the base paths before a throwing error by UC Davis allowed White to score. Ercolano to advanced to third on the play and then came in to score off Escalante’s sacrifice fly.
The Aggies added one run to the board in the sixth but were not able to close the gap in the seventh. After giving up a two-out walk, Sophie Slagle forced a fly out to left field to close the game for the Highlanders and clinch the 8-5 victory.
Slagle went six innings for UC Riverside, holding the Aggies to one run and three hits to earn the win. Leah Munden was charged with the loss for UC Davis.
In game two, after four scoreless innings that saw six runners left on base, the Aggies broke the tie in the top of the fifth when they plated three runs off UC Riverside starter Alyssa Razo. Cassandra Ginnis lined a one-out single to left field before advancing to second and then third on two wild pitches. Consecutive walks and a third wild pitch put two more runners on and allowed Ginnis to score from third. Christa Castello doubled down the left field line to add two more runs to the board for UC Davis.
The Highlanders threatened in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities leaving three on base. UC Riverside rallied in the bottom of the seventh to load the bases off two singles and a hit batter. After Pickett was thrown out at home, Anderson singled to shortstop to score Escalante and bring the game within two, 3-1.
But Jessica Thweatt secured the final out and clinched the win for UC Davis ending any chance of a Highlanders comeback.
Thweatt went the distance in the circle for the Aggies giving up one run on eight hits to earn the victory for UCD. Razo was charged with the loss giving up three runs on eight hits and three walks.
UC Riverside concludes the Big West series against UC Davis on Sunday at 12 pm PT at Amy S. Harrison Field.
