Box Score—UC Davis 1, UC Riverside 0
Riverside—Following a doubleheader split on Saturday, the UC Riverside Softball Team (17-28, 1-13) dropped the three-game Big West Conference series to UC Davis Sunday with a 1-0 loss at Amy S. Harrison Field.
UC Davis (19-23, 6-9) took advantage of UCR starting pitcher Sophie Slagle with one hit, one walk and two hit by pitches in the first two innings. In each frame, the Aggies put two runners on, but both times, Slagle and the Highlanders defense came away unscathed. In the third, Slagle retired the side in order, and again in the fourth only three batters came to the plate.
Meanwhile, UCD pitcher Justine Vela shutdown the UCR offense, giving up one hit and one walk through three innings. In the fourth, Alexis Pickett blasted a two-out triple to right center, but the Highlanders failed to convert any runs.
In the top of the fifth, the Aggies got a leadoff single, but the runner eventually got out as the UCR defense turned a double play with the next batter.
In the sixth, a walk, single and an error loaded the bases for UC Davis with one out. JJ Wagoner came to the plate, and reached on a fielder's choice as the runner from third was out at the plate, preserving the 0-0 tie. That brought Kayla Tyler up to bat, who hit a hard fly ball into the outfield, but was corraled by UCR centerfielder Kayla White for the third out of the inning.
The Aggies converted in the seventh, though, as Chandler Wagner singled to lead off the inning and eventually came home on Kristin Bava's single to left field.
The Highlanders were retired in order in both the fifth and sixth innings, and had one final frame to tie or take the lead down 1-0 in the seventh. Ashley Ercolano lined out for the first out of the inning, but Pickett was hit by a pitch to put the tying run on base. Marissa Escalante then struck out, bringing up pinch-hitter Kaylie Atkinson, who popped up to first base the end the game.
Slagle struck out six while walking three in the loss for UC Riverside. Vela allowed just two hits all day while walking one in the win for the Aggies.
The Highlanders remain at home this week hosting Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, April 24 for a single game starting at 3 pm PT at Amy S. Harrison Field.
