Box Score—UC Santa Barbara 5, UC Riverside 1
Santa Barbara, CA—Following a 1-0 loss in game one of the doubleheader Friday afternoon, the UC Riverside Softball Team failed to rebound in the nightcap falling 5-1 to UC Santa Barbara.
The Gauchos scored three runs in the first and never looked back adding a solo run in the second and fourth innings. Both teams had opportunities to score more runs, as each squad left 11 runners on base.
In the first, UCSB had runners at the corners with one out for Keilani Jennings, who doubled to center field to plate both runs. Kathryn Pilpil followed with a double to left field that scored Jennings for the early 3-0 lead.
An inning later, Pilpil drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to bring home the fourth run of the game. That ended the day for UCR pitcher Sophie Slagle, who was replaced in the circle by Ashley Ercolano. Ercolano got the final out of the inning, and allowed only one baserunner in the third.
In the fourth, though, Shelby Widsom homered to increase the Gauchos lead to 5-0. Ercolano allowed two more hits that inning, but got out of the frame with no more damage done.
The Highlanders threatened by putting rallies together in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innigs, but fell short of converting more than a single run.
In the fourth, Marissa Escalante singled to lead off the frame, and advanced to second on a Dionne Anderson single. Ashley Ercolano and Kaylie Atkinson each followed with fielder's choices, but both times UCR's lead runner was forced out.
UC Riverside had the bases loaded with two outs in the fifth inning thanks to singles from Kayla White and Ariel Shore, and a walk to Anderson. A strikeout by Ercolano ended the rally, though, leaving three runners on base.
In the sixth, Alexis Pickett laced a lead-off single, and moved to third on a double from Brittanie Akey. The next two batters both hit grounds out, as UCR again left runners in scoring position.
Down to their last inning, the Highlanders finally got one across in the seventh. Shore led off with a single, and with one out, came home on an Anderson double to centerfield. That was all the scoring UCR could muster though, as back-to-back fly outs ended the game with the Gauchos on top, 5-1.
The Highlanders conclude the 2013 season with a final game at UC Santa Barbara scheduled for Saturday at noon PT in Santa Barbara, CA.
