Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team sent its seniors out on top Saturday as the Highlanders concluded their 2013 season with a 4-2 win over Hawaii (Box Score).
Prior to the game, UCR (14-32, 10-17) honored its eight seniors, and during the game, those seniors made sure the day would be a memorable one. Kyle Boudreau, Clayton Prestridge and Bart Steponovich went a combined five for 10 with two runs and an RBI, and Mark Garcia and Trevor Frank threw three-and-a-third innings of scoreless relief
It was the Rainbows (16-35, 11-16) who struck first at the ‘Plex, though, as they strung together two singles and a sacrifice fly in the third to plate one against Highlanders starter Zach Varela (5-0).
;
After three scoreless innings that saw Hawai'i starter Matt Cooper (3-8) record seven fly ball outs, UC Riverside finally figured him out in the fourth putting a three spot on the board.
Boudreau’s lead-off double started it off for the Highlanders and singles from Clayton Prestridge and David Andriese tied the game at one.
With runners at first and second, a failed Cooper pick off attempt and throwing error resulted in another Highlander run as Prestridge scored from second, and Andriese advanced to third. Phil Holinsworth followed with a walk, and Francisco Tellez made it a 3-1 UC Riverside lead thanks to a double play ground out.
The Rainbows made it a one-run game in the next half inning plating an unearned run thanks to a UCR defensive miscue, but Boudreau's sac fly in the bottom of the frame scored Alex Rubanowitz to push the lead back out to two.
Varela pitched into the sixth being lifted in favor of Garcia with two outs. Garcia gave up just one hit in his one-and-two-thirds innings of relief before giving way to Frank.
Frank closer out his UC Riverside career by throwing one-and-two-thirds innings without surrendering a hit or a walk while picking up his 10th save of the season.
