Men's Soccer Battles UC Santa Barbara For 110 Minutes, But Has To Settle For 1-1 Tie

Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team battled UC Santa Barbara through a 50 minute delay to start the match, two overtime periods and 10 cards Friday evening before finally settling for a 1-1 tie (video recap).
The match began late as UC Santa Barbara's bus had difficulty making its way to the Inland Empire, and kick off was moved back 50 minutes.
When play finally began, the Highlanders dominated, outshooting the Gauchos nine to three in the first 45 minutes of play. Ulises Mosqueda put UCR on the board in the 17th minute as Otis Earle drove into the left corner. He then tapped the ball back to Ricardo Ruiz who was trailing the play, and Ruiz found Mosqueda for the header on the right side of the box.
UC Riverside was attacking in the 53rd minute when Michael Salazar found Juan Mendoza just inside the Gauchos box. Isamile Jome knocked Mendoza to the ground, but the Highlanders didn't get the call. UC Santa Barbara launched a counter attack, and after UCR cleared the ball, Jome sent a cross through the UCR defense. Kevin Garcia-Lopez was there to convert on a one-timer to tie the score at one.
Jeff Quezada picked up his second yellow card of the match with 16:12 to go in regulation, as the Gauchos were forced to play a man down the rest of the way. Shortly thereafter, Dylan Murphy received a red card to give the Highlanders a two-man advantage.
UC Riverside continued to press for the go-ahead goal, and had their best opportunity on an Eric Gonzalez restart just outside the Gauchos 18, but Brandon Berke came up with the save, and the teams ended the match in a 1-1 tie.
The Highlanders have just one match next week as they travel to Northridge on Saturday, October 18 where they will take on the Matadors at 7 pm PT.
