Salt Lake City, UT—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team travels to Utah Friday evening to take on the #25 Utes for the first time in program history. Tip is slated for 6 pm PT.
The Highlanders were looking to start the season with a 2-0 record for the first time since 1998-99 as they hosted Sacramento State on Monday. Unfortunately, the Hornetswere able to eke out a 70-69 victory (box score/recap). Big West Player of the Year candidate Taylor John led UC Riverside with 19-points and 11-rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Jaylen Bland added 17 points, and Steven Thornton chipped in with 14.
Utah opened its 2014-15 season with a home win against Ball State, 90-72, but lost to #16 San Diego State, 53-49 on Tuesday of this week. Brandon Taylor is leading four Utes players in double figures this season with an average of 14.0 points per game, while Jakob Poeltl is averaging 11.0 rebounds per game.
On Sunday, November 23, UC Riverside will return home to play against Saint Katherine for the first time in program history. The Fighting Firebirds will take on University of Mary on Friday, November 21 and Chapman University on Saturday, November 22.
