Jaylen Bland Goes Five For Five From Three-Point Range In 102-49 Win Over Saint Katherine
11/23/2014 3:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—Jaylen Bland went five for five from three point land, scoring 20 points, and Charles Standifer connected on three shots from long distance for 14 points as the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team beat visiting Saint Kathrine, Sunday afternoon, 102-49.
The Firebirds jumped on top early taking an 11-4 lead with 3:05 gone in the game thanks in part to three-pointers by D'Vaughn Mann, Dante Miller and Anthony Miller.
The Highlanders found their collective rythym shortly thereafter, however, as Saint Katherine connected on just one shot from long range the rest of the day finishing 4 for 24 from that distance. Instead it was UC Riverside who feasted from beyond the arc making 10 of 16 shots. Brand and Standifer combined to go eight for eight from three-point range while Robert Boezeman and Nick Gruninger each made their lone three-point attempts of the afternoon.
It was a Boezeman layup that ended the Firebirds opening run, and Bland's first trifecta of the day nearly three minutes later gave the Highlanders a lead they would never relinquish, 15-13.
From there, UC Riverside methodically increased its lead from two to 10 at the 10:11 mark, 20 with 4:11 remaining in the first and 27 heading into the locker room.
Bland scored 14 of his game-high 20 prior to intermission, while Standifer and Boezeman scored 12 a piece. As a team, the Highlanders made 18 of 30 shots from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play, including seven of nine from three-point range.
It was more of the same in the second half as UCR pushed its lead to 30 points less than two minutes into the period, and to 40 points with 12:40 to go. A Cheick Thiero layup with 3:36 on the clock made it 94-43 Highlanders, and the crowd began chanting "tri-ple dig-its".
Kris Acevedo game the what they wanted with 50 seconds remaining, as his jumper pushed UC Riverside to the century mark.
Head Coach Dennis Cutts was able to use his entire roster on the day as no player played more than 20 minutes and 13 of 14 players logged at least 10 minutes.
The Highlanders hit the road this Wednesday, November 26 for a 5 pm PT tip at LMU before breaking for Thanksgiving. They return home on Saturday, November 29 to take on Abilene Christian at 1 pm at the SRC Arena.
