Men's Basketball Tops Holy Names, 66-49, In Lone Exhibition Game Of The Season

Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team defeated Holy Names 66-49 Friday evening in the team's first and only exhibition game of the 2014-15 season. The Highlanders begin regular season play on Saturday, November 15 as they host UC San Diego for Homecoming beginning at 4 pm PT (box score).
UC Riverside took a 2-0 lead before a second had ticked off the clock as the Hawks were called for a technical foul for dunking during pregame warm-ups. The Highlanders never trailed as Jaylen Bland (17 points, 12 rebounds) and Taylor Johns (16 points, 14 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles and Nick Gruninger added 12 points.
UC Riverside turned a four-point lead with 7:57 to go in the first half into a 14-point advantage seven minutes later and led by double figures the rest of the way.
The Highlanders used their height and speed advantage to outscore Holy Names 38-18 in the paint. They also dominated the glass, 43-26, topping the Hawks 18-7 in second chance points.
Defensively, UC Riverside kept Holy Names off balance the entire game holding them to 31.1 percent shooting.
Dante Robinson led the Hawks with 21 points off the bench.
