Fresno, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team picked up a pair of victories Sunday to conclude the Fresno State Kick Off, defeating Southern Utah, 5-3 (Box Score), and Sacramento State, 1-0 (Box Score).
The Highlanders (3-6) win back-to-back games for the first time this season, and earn their first shutout of 2014.
In game one, Southern Utah got on the scoreboard in the first inning, plating a pair on a Kadi Henderson double. UCR responded as Dionne Andereson led off with a single, and advanced home following a Karina Romero triple. Natalie Sanchez sent Romero home on an RBI ground to third base, tying the game at 2-2.
The Highlanders tacked on a single run in the second as Kris DeAnda's single to right field scored Shylene Helms, who singled to lead off the inning.
The 3-2 score held until the fifth, when UCR added two more insurance runs. Like the first inning, Anderson singled and was brough home by a Romero RBI double. Romero advanced to third on a wild pitch, and crossed home on a Marissa Escalante RBI ground out.
The Thunderbirds threatened in the sixth and seventh leaving two runners on base in both innings, but UCR pitcher Alyssa Razo closed out her complete game unscathed to pick up the win.
Razo tossed all seven innings giving up five hits and two runs while striking out nine.
In the second game, UC Riverside looked to avenge a 9-1 loss to Sacramento State from the day prior, and did so in a 1-0 pitcher's duel.
After four scoreless innings, the Highlanders scored the go ahead run in the fifth on an Anderson RBI single.
The Hornets left 10 runners on base throughout the game, but could not get past UCR pitcher Ashley Ercolano, who tossed the shutout.
On the day, both Anderson and Romero scored two runs while getting three hits.
Next up for UC Riverside is five games at the Amy S. Harrison Classic from February 21-23 at Amy. S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
