Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team won two in singles and one in doubles, but it wasn't enough as the UC San Diego Tritons came away with the 5-2 victory Wednesday afternoon at Andulka Park.
UCR's doubles duo of Luis Gastao and Sean Robles earned an 8-5 win at #3, but UCSD claimed identical 8-5 wins at numbers one and two to secure the first point of the match.
In singles, Cooper Bridge won 6-3, 3-0 retired over Kona Luu at number three, while Michael Carella rallied back to win 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 at #6 to give the Highlanders two points in the match.
Gastao lost in a tiebreaker at #1, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8, while Marcus Vizcarra's match at number 5 was a close 6-3, 7-5 contest in his loss.
Although UCR played UC San Diego close, the Tritons won in four singles matches for the victory.
"We are improving, but we just need a breakthrough," Head Coach Tim Downey stated. "We will see a whole new team soon."
Next up for the Highlanders is a Big West Conference contest against Cal Poly this Saturday, February 22 at 12 pm PT at Andulka Park in Riverside.
