Crain's 31 Pts & 11 Rbs Help UCR Rally Back From 10 Down For 67-57 Win Over UCSB

Riverside - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team erased a 10-point deficit, and Brittany Crain recorded a double-double of 31 points and 11 rebounds, as the Highlanders won their second straight, 67-57, Thursday evening against UC Santa Barbara. UCR improves to 2-10 in Big West action, while the Gauchos fall to 2-9. Box Score.
Crain scored 19 of her 31 points in the second period, while Simone DeCoud added 15 points in the half as the Highlanders outscored UCSB, 48-33 in that second period.
Despite shooting just 22.2 percent in the first half, the Highlanders found themselves down just five, 24-19, at the break. There were four tie scores and four lead changes within the first 11 minutes of action as neither team led by more than three points.
With UCR leading 14-13 following a DeCoud three-pointer at the 8:52 juncture, UC Santa Barbara went on a 9-0 run over the next four and a half minutes to go up 22-14. UC Riverside went cold from the field, missing all four attempts, and did not connect until a Natasha Hadley jumper at 2:39 jump-started a 5-0 run that cut the margin to three, 22-19, with 1:04 remaining in the half.
UC Riverside cut the lead to one, 24-23, after scoring four straight to open the second period, but the Gauchos used an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to increase its lead to 35-25.
After trading buckets, the Highlanders countered scoring 11 straight to take a 38-37 advantage with 10:04 to go. That run was part of a larger 13-4 run as UCR scored nine straight--five from Crain and four from DeCoud--as the lead reached 50-41 at the 6:48 mark.
UC Riverside's lead reached double-digits a few minutes later, and never dipped below eight the rest of the way as the victory was in hand.
UCR shot 56 percent from the field in the second half for a 38.5 overall field goal percentage. The Gauchos hit just 34.4 percent from the field.
Hadley became the 15th member to reach the Highlanders 1,000 point club, as she needed to score six entering Thursday's game, and ended up with eight.
Kiara Harewood recorded a game-high 13 rebounds to lead all players.
Melissa Zornig led three UCSB players in double-figure scoring with 16 points.
Next up for the Highlanders is a Saturday, February 22 meeting against Cal Poly at 7 pm PT at the SRC Arena in Riverside.
