The 'Runners touched UCR starter Sophie Slagle for four runs in the second inning. With the bases loaded and one out, an error by the Highlanders shortstop allowed the first run to come across. A batter later, Karissa Viego lined a triple down the right field line to clear the bases and put CSUB up, 4-0.
Bakersfield tacked on another four runs in the third to go up 8-0. With a runner at second, Jessica Castenada doubled to centerfield, scoring Madison Bundy, who led off with a walk.
That ended Slagle's turn in the circle, giving way to Ashley Ercolano. Ercolano did not fair much better, however, as she gave up three hits in the next four batters as three more runs came across.
UCR did not get detered, however, and rallied to comeback for the win.
It started with a push in the bottom of the third, batting around the order and scoring five runs to cut the margin to 8-5.
With the bases loaded and one out, Ercolano helped her own cause, singling to left center and driving in a pair. Shylene Helms drove in the third run of the inning with a grounder to third, and subsequent singles by Taylor Wright and Stephanie Tickemyer drove in another two runs as the lead was down to three, 8-5.
The next inning, the Highlanders continued their offensive onslaught, scoring six runs on four hits and one error—all with two outs. With runners at first and second, Natalie Sanchez doubled to left center, scoring the pair as the Bakersfield lead was down to 8-7.
A walk to Wright put runners on first and second, and after a pitching change, Tickemyer singled up the middle to score Sanchez for the tying run. A wild pitch then advanced both runners, and both then came home as Kris DeAnda reached on an error by the CSUB shortstop, in which the ball went through her legs.
That put UC Riverside up 10-8, and Anderson drove in another run as she doubled to drive in DeAnda, 11-8.
Bakersfield threatened in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with two outs, but the Highlanders forced an out at the plate to come away unscathed.
In the bottom of the fifth, UC Riverside tacked on another two runs to increase the lead to 13-8. Sanchez came through again for the Highlanders, driving in Ercolano and Romero, who reached base on a hit by pitch and single respectively.
The Roadrunners countered with two runs in the top of the sixth, on a Castenada two-RBI homer to make it 13-10. The Highlanders got those runs back in the bottom of that frame, as Ercolano drove in two with her double to right field.
CSUB went in order in the top of the seventh, and as the sun was setting in Riverside, the Highlanders completed their come-from-behind victory.
Ercolano and Sanchez both recorded four RBI to lead the team, while three other players had multi-hit games.
UC Riverside now concludes play at the Amy S. Harrison Classic on Sunday with two games, facing off against Seattle at 11:30 am, and again versus Bakersfield at 2 pm.
