Softball Falls To LMU, 5-3, On Day Two Of The Amy S. Harrison Classic

Riverside—The UC Riverside Softball Team dropped a 5-3 decision Saturday morning to Loyola Marymount in game two of the Amy S. Harrison Classic. Box Score.
The Highlanders got on board first, scoring a single run in the third inning. Dionne Anderson earned a leadoff walk, and promptly stole second before advancing to third on a Karina Romero sac bunt. Taylor Wright then hit a sac fly to shallow left, and Anderson beat out the throw to the plate putting UCR up, 1-0.
On the mound, UCR starting pitcher Ashley Ercolano held Loyola Marymount without a run, scattering four hits throughout the first four innings.
The Lions took the lead in the fifth, however, as Ercolano gave way to Alyssa Razo in the circle. With two outs, Stephanie Crist turned on an offering sending it over the left field fence for the 1-1 tie.
A double followed, and a hit by pitch put runners at first and second. It looked as if the Highlanders would get out of the inning without another run scoring, but a UCR defensive miscue on the next batter allowed one run to score, as LMU went up 2-1. Nichole Clowdus then laced a double to left field, sending two more home as the margin reached three, 4-1.
The Highlanders got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 4-3. Marissa Escalante led off with a walk, and moved to second following a Haley Harris single. A passed ball moved both runners up, and a sac fly from Stephanie Tickemyer scored Escalante from third.
After the second out, Anderson was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and third, and Romero came through with a single to left field to score Harris for the 4-3 score.
Loyola Marymount countered in the top of the seventh with a single run, as Taryn Renowden singled to lead off the frame, and eventually came home on a sac fly from Clowdus.
Down to their last three outs, the Highlanders got the first two batters onto the basepaths in the seventh inning, but three consecutive outs ended the game as LMU held on for the 5-3 victory.
UC Riverside now plays Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon to conclude the second day of the tournament.
