Back-To-Back Homers Propel Softball To 5-3 Victory Over Monmouth

Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team defeated Monmouth by the score of 5-3 on Thursday afternoon utilizing nine hits to earn the win. Box Score.
UCR starting pitcher Alyssa Razo had some trouble early, loading the bases in both the first and fourth innings. Fortunately for the Highlanders, she got out of both jams unscathed.
Dionne Anderson scored the first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the first to put UCR on top, 1-0. Anderson singled to lead off and stole second before advancing to third on a throwing error by the Momnouth catcher. Karina Romero then singled to right field to drive the run home.
The Hawks scored the equalizer in the second, however, on a solo home run from Raelynn Galindo. The Highlanders countered in the bottom of the third inning, though, as Haley Harris' double drove in Kris DeAnda, who reached base on a hit by pitch.
UCR added two more runs in the fourth following back-to-back solo home run blasts from Kaylie Atkinson and Ashley Ercolano (watch the video of the home runs).
Razo allowed a lead-off double to start the fifth, and that ended her day as Sophie Slagle took to the circle. Monmouth had runners at second and third with two outs, and got one run across on a Jill Freese single to left field. The Eagles sent the runner from second home, but Stephanie Tickemyer's throw from left field was spot on, and catcher Natalie Sanchez tagged the runner to end the inning.
The Highlanders tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an Anderson double which sent DeAnda home from first after advancing on a fielder's choice.
Monmouth threatened in the seventh by scoring one run, and had the winning run at the plate before UC Riverside recorded the third out of the inning to seal the win.
Razo earned the victory in the circle tossing four innings, while Slagle got the save.
The Highlanders now play Dartmouth at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside Thursday afternoon.
