Win Streak Reaches Four As Softball Claims 5-2 Victory Over Utah State

Riverside—The UC Riverside Softball Team extended its win streak to a season-best four games on Friday following a 5-2 victory over Utah State in the first game of the Highlander Classic. Box Score.
Haley Harris drove in a pair of runs while six other players tallied hits to give UCR its seventh win in the last eight games.
The Highlanders got on board early scoring two runs in the first inning. Dionne Anderson singled to lead off and promptly stole second. With two outs, Natalie Sanchez singled up the middle to score Anderson, making it 1-0 UCR.
Marissa Escalante then drew a walk, and Ashley Ercolano laced a single up the middle to score Sanchez from second for the 2-0 score.
Meanwhile, UC Riverside starter pitcher Alyssa Razo held the Aggies bats relatively quiet allowing two hits through three innings.
In the fourth, however, Victoria Saucedo hit a solo home run to center field, cutting the margin in half, 2-1. After alllowing a walk, Razo got the next three batters out to end the threat.
UCR responded in its respective fourth inning with three runs to go up by a score of 5-1.
Shylene Helms led things off with a single, and was sacrificed over to second on an Anderson bunt. Karina Romero then singled to centerfield scoring Helms, and Harris homered to right center in the next at bat for the 2-RBI blast.
Razo retired the side in order in the fifth, and in the sixth, Sophie Slagle came on to pitch also retiring three batters.
In the seventh, however, Slagle gave up a leadoff double and back to back singles as Utah State cut the lead to 5-2 with no outs.
That would change momentarily, however, as Slagle worked out of the jam getting two infield pop ups and a final fly out to end the inning and the game.
UC Riverside now continues play at the Highlander Classic on Saturday with games against San Diego and Idaho State slated for 11:30 am PT and 2 pm respectively.
