Long Beach, CA—With the Big West Conference tournament seeding set in stone for both clubs, the UC Riverside vs. Long Beach State game was merely a tune up for March Madness. The Highlanders secured the eight seed in the tournament with their win over UC Davis on Thursday, and they will take on top seeded UC Irvine on Thursday, March 13 beginning at 6 pm PT.
The 49ers led wire-to-wire building a 12-point halftime lead thanks to a 7-0 run over the final 1:41 of the period. It was more of the same in the second as Long Beach built a 20-point lead with 3:14 to go in the game.
That's when the Highlanders mounted a furious comeback, scoring 13 straight points over the next 2:40 to trail by seven, 72-65. Aaron Moye made one of two free-throws on the 49ers next possession, and Austin Quick drained a jumper to bring UC Riverside within six, but that was as close as the Highlanders would get, and Long Beach State emerged with a 74-67 victory (Box Score).
Steven Thornton led UC Riverside with 17 points, while Quick chipped in with 16, 13 of which came after the break. Sam Finley scored 14 points, and Lucas Devenny grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Dan Jennings paced the 49ers with a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double, while Mike Caffey scored 13 points, and Tyler Lamb added 11.
