Fullerton, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team split a doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, winning 6-3 in game one (box score) before falling 4-2 in the second game (box score).
The Highlanders picked up their first victory in Big West play with the victory in game one as Alyssa Razo tossed a complete game allowing just three single runs over the course of the game.
UCR got on board in the first inning as a double from Karina Romero followed by a single from Ashley Ercolano put runners on the corners. Haley Harris then reached on a RBI fielder's choice, scoring Romero for the first run of the game. With two outs, Stephanie Tickemyer singled to load the bases, and Kaylie Atkinson came through with a single down the left field line as two runners came across for the 3-0 advantage.
The Titans got one run back in the bottom of that frame following a sacrifice fly from Gabby Aragon.
The teams' combined for just one baserunner over the next two innings, but in the fourth, CSF closed the gap by another run as Aragon pelted a solo homer to left center as the lead became 3-2.
UC Riverside scored three insurance runs in the sixth to open up a 6-2 lead.
A fielder's error followed by consecutive walks loaded the bases for the Highlanders. That led to a Titans pitching change, but the new hurler didn't fair much better, walking two more batters as two runs came across. That led to another pitching change, but this time a wild pitch allowed the third UCR run of the inning to score.
UC Riverside would end up stranding three runners in the inning as another walk loaded the bases, but an infield pop up garnered the third out of the frame.
In the bottom of the sixth, Cal State Fullerton had runners at second and third with two outs as Samantha Galarza's single to center field scored one run. UCR got out of the frame without another score as a rundown at third base resulted in the third out of the inning.
The Titans put together another rally in the bottom of the seventh using two singles and walk to load the bases, but Razo and the Highlanders defense got out of the jam to preserve the win, 6-3.
In game two of the doubleheader, it was a pitcher's duel early on as the teams' combined for three baserunners through three and a half innings. CSF took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, though, scoring a pair of runs to go up 2-0.
UC Riverside tied the game in the sixth using two hits and a CSF error. With runners at first and second with two outs, Harris reached on a throwing error by Fullerton's short stop, allowing the runner from second, Anderson, to score unearned. Natalie Sanchez then followed with a double down the left field line to score the next runner and make it a 2-2 ballgame.
Cal State Fullerton retook the lead in the bottom of that frame, scoring two more runs as the lead became 4-2.
UCR had one more opportunity to tie or take the lead in the seventh, getting a runner on base with two outs, but a final ground out ended any comeback bid as the Titans held on to the victory.
These teams battle once more with the series finale slated for Sunday, April 13 at 12 pm PT in Fullerton, CA.
