Offense Comes Alive As Softball Takes Series Finale From UC Davis, 8-2

Davis, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team snapped a five-game losing streak and won the finale against UC Davis Sunday afternoon, 8-2, in Big West Conference action. Box Score.
The Highlanders (22-26 3-12) got out on top early, putting a three-spot on the board in the first, and two more in the third.
In the first inning, Dionne Anderson singled up the middle, and after stealing second, came home on Natalie Sanchez's RBI double. With two outs, Taylor Wright singled to move Sanchez to third, and Haley Harris proceeded to double sending both runners home and staking UCR to a 3-0 lead.
In the third, Karina Romero led off with a single, and after stealing second, advanced home after Ashley Ercolano's RBI single. Ercolano would eventually end up on third following an Aggies throwing error, and Wright came through again with another single as Ercolano touched home for a 5-0 advantage.
UC Davis got one run back in the bottom of the third on a RBI ground out to cut the margin to 5-1. The next frame, UCD tacked on another run on a solo homer as the lead became 5-2.
But UC Riverside responded scoring an additional three runs in the fifth.
Anderson singled to lead off, and after stealing second, scored on Romero's single, 6-2. Sanchez was then hit by a pitch, and Ercolano drew a walk to load the bases. Wright hit a sac fly to centerfield that scored Romero, and after a Harris single to again load the bases, Kaylie Atkinson hit another sac fly to bring Sanchez home for the 8-2 lead.
The Highlanders tagged a runner out at the plate in the sixth inning to preserve their six-run lead, and in the seventh, UCR pitcher Alyssa Razo retired the Aggies in order for the win. Razo tossed all seven innings scattering five hits and allowing just two earned runs to claim her 13th victory of the year.
On the day, five UCR players recorded two hits apiece, while Wright and Harris both drove in a pair.
UC Riverside now returns home for its regular season home finale slated for May 3-4 against UC Santa Barbara at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
