UC Santa Barbara Tallies 13 Hits In 4-1 Victory Over UC Riverside Softball
5/3/2014 12:21:00 PM | Softball
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team allowed 13 hits Saturday to UC Santa Barbara as the Gauchos (31-18, 11-5) took game one of the three-game Big West series, 4-1. Box Score.
The Highlanders (22-27, 3-13) scored in the first inning as Dionne Anderson singled and stole second, and came home on Karina Romero's single up the middle.
The Gauchos tied it up in the second as a single, walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases, and another walk sent the tying run home, 1-1.
In the fourth, UC Santa Barbara took a 2-1 advantage following a double and two singles. That would prove to be the eventual game-winner as the Highlanders could not get another run across the rest of the way.
UCSB added to its lead in the next frame scoring with two outs as a Lauren Boser single plated MeShalon Moore from second to make it 3-1. In the sixth, Shelby Wisdom hit a solo homer to right field to increase the Gauchos lead to 4-1.
The Highlanders threatened in the sixth as back-to-back singles from Anderson and Romero put runners on with no outs. Natalie Sanchez then hit a fly ball to right field that was caught, but allowed Anderson to reach third. Unfortunately for UCR, consecutive outs ended the inning leaving both runners stranded.
In the seventh, pinch-hitter Nicolette Lujan singled with two outs to keep UC Riverside's comeback bid alive, but a final line out ended the game as UCSB had the 4-1 win in hand.
UC Santa Barbara pitcher Shelby Wisdom earned the win in the circle scattering five hits, while UCR pitcher Alyssa Razo took the loss.
The teams now prepare for game two of the doubleheader set for approximately 2:45 pm PT Saturday.
