Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team put the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning, but fell just shy of a comeback as UC Santa Barbara (33-18, 13-5) held on for a 5-3 victory at Amy S. Harrison Field in Big West Conference action. Box Score. Watch the recap video.
Prior to first pitch, the Highlanders (22-29, 3-15) celebrated senior day by honoring the class of 2014: outfielder Dionne Anderson. View the photo gallery from senior day.
UC Santa Barbara spoiled senior day, however, quickly taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. UCR starting pitcher Alyssa Razo looked sharp early on, getting the first two Gauchos batters out in the top of the first inning. She allowed a two-out walk to Shelby Wisdom, though, and MeShalon Moore doubled to left field to drive Wisdom home for the 1-0 lead. The next batter, Kathryn Pilpil, hit a blooper single into the outfield that was just enough to score Moore as UCSB went up 2-0.
In the second, Wisdom and Moore connected again to score a run for UC Santa Barbara as Wisdom doubled and came around on Moore's single. The Gauchos would eventually load the bases, but Razo and the Highlanders worked themselves out of the jam without another run coming across.
UC Riverside got on board in the third, stopping UCSB pitcher Shelby Wisdom's perfect game. Summer Wilson drew a lead-off walk, and was sacrificed to second on Nicolette Lujan's sac bunt. Wilson then reached third on a botched pick off attempt as the UCSB catcher threw down to second, but no defender was there to catch the ball. Kris DeAnda followed with a RBI double to left center field, scoring Wilson for the 3-1 margin.
UCR threatened the next inning, using a two-out rally to get baserunners on. Ashley Ercolano and Haley Harris both singled, and moved up a base following a passed ball by the UCSB catcher. That put the leading run at the plate, but a fly out ended the frame as the Highlanders stranded their runners.
The Gauchos tacked on two additional runs in the fifth to go up 5-1. With the bases loaded following two singles and a walk, Emily Brucelas hit a sac fly to center to score the runner from third. Stacy Cavazos followed with a single to centerfield, and the runner from second beat out the throw to score safely.
The Highlanders got one run back in the fifth cutting the advantage to 5-2. Lujan singled to lead off, and reached second after a throwing error by the UCSB first baseman who tried to get her out following a fielder's choice to Anderson. A foul out then moved Lujan to third, and UC Riverside executed a double steal as Anderson went to second, and the Gauchos took the bait throwing down, allowing Lujan to steal home.
UCR got out of jams in the sixth and seventh innings as UCSB stranded two runners each time, and looked to make a rally in the seventh trailing by three runs.
Wilson got things started with a single to left field, and moved to second on a Lujan ground out. DeAnda then blasted a double to right field, scoring Wilson and cutting the advantage to 5-3.
Anderson kept the rally going with a single to right field, moving DeAnda to third. Anderson then stole second to put two in scoring position, with the potential winning run at the plate. Unfortunately for the blue and gold, consecutive fly outs ended the rally as the Gauchos held on for the win.
For the day, DeAnda went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI while five others recorded hits.
The Highlanders now prepare for their final regular season series, traveling to Cal Poly on May 9-10.
