Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team improved to 3-1 on the season, Tuesday, with an 81-55 victory over visiting Delaware State. The last time the Highlanders began the year with three wins in their first four games was in 2008-09, en route to their only winning record in the program's Division I era at 17-13.
The Hornets jumped out to an early, 6-2 lead, and still led by one, 10-9, with 13:13 to go in the first, but UC Riverside scored the next 13 points giving them a lead they would never relinquish. Five different players took part in the offensive surge led by Robert Boezeman's four. Gentrey Thomas added three points during the run, and led the team at the break with nine points, five rebounds and three steals.
UC Riverside led by 11 heading into intermission, 34-23, and expanded the advantage to as many as 28 during the final 20 minutes of play. That allowed Head Coach Dennis Cutts to turn to his bench for quality minutes as no member of the team played more than 27, and nine players logged more than 15.
Thomas and Jaylen Bland tied for the team scoring lead with 16 points apiece, while Secean Johnson added 13. Menno Dijkstra played 17 minutes and came up just shy of a double-double with seven points and eight rebounds.
As a team, the Highlanders connected on 49.1 percent of their shots including 42.9 percent from three-point range. On the year, UCR is making shots from beyond the arc at a 42.5 percent clip, and outscoring the opposition by 17.8 points per game
The Highlanders are on the road for the Thanksgiving break traveling to Rice on Friday, November 27 (5 pm PT) and to Lamar on Sunday, November 29 (12 pm).
