12-0 Run To Start Second Half Helps Men's Basketball To 63-54 WIn Over Denver

Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team (8-5) used a 12-0 run to open the second half, turning a three-point lead into a 15-point advantage en route to a 63-54 victory over visiting Denver Tuesday evening.
Taylor Johns, who was held without a shot in the first half, scored eight points in the run, finishing with 14. Jaylen Bland scored 14 of the Highlanders 29 first-half points, and finished with a game-high 20.
Neither team led by more than six in the first half, and the score was 29-26 at the break despite both teams connecting on more than 50 percent of their field goal attempts.
UC Riverside led by as many as 19 in the second half, 53-34, with just over 10 minutes to go. The Pioneers (8-5) countered with a 7-0 run of their own to close the gap, and cut the lead to 10 with under four minutes remaining, and eight with 95 seconds on the clock. But the Highlanders made six free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
UCR continued its hot shooting over the final 20 minutes of play making 52.9 percent from the floor, while the Highlanders clamped down on Denver in the second holding the Pioneers to 40.0 percent.
Joe Rosga paced Denver with 11 points, while Nate Engesser added 10.
The Highlanders take a break for the holidays this week before getting back to business on December 28 at Morgan State. Tip at the Bears' Talmadge L. Hill Field House is 10 am PT.
