Seattle, Washington—It was another banner day for the UC Riverside Tracl & Field program as Asha Giles, Vesta Bell and Weslie Totten each carved their name in the Highlanders record books Friday at Washington's Husky Classic.
The ink was barely dry on Noelle Abboud's two-week old record in the Women's 200m when Giles crossed the finish line in 24.70 breaking Abboud's mark by more than half a second. That was good enough for a fifth place finish in the event ahead of athletes from Stanford, Oregon State, Cal and the host Huskies.
Bell broke Brittany Daniels four-year old record in the weight throw with a top mark of 19.40m (63' 7.75") bettering the old distance by more than a foot.
Totten erased the Highlanders' second oldest indoor record still on the books running the 5,000m in 17:08.28. That was eight seconds better than Cristina Olivas' time of 17:16.51 set on February 14, 2009.
On the men's side, Seth Totten posted the second best UC Riverside men's time in the 5,000m coming up less than three seconds shy of All-American Frank Assuma's top mark of 14:05.0 set in 1982. Totten finished in 14:07.86.
Saturday's running events commence with the Women's 60m Hurdles at 9:05 am. Field events begin at 10 am with the Women's High Jump, Women's Long Jump and Men's long Jump. Invitational Running events start at 3:05 pm with the Women's 60m. The final event of the day is the Men's 4x400m Relay at 5:50 pm.
