Box Score Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team had #22 Oregon on the ropes Tuesday evening, loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the 12th, but Alex Rubanowitz hit into a double play, and the Ducks scored three runs in the top of the 13th to escape The Plex with a 10-7 victory.
Oregon (16-8) jumped out on top first plating two runs in the top of the third as Mitchell Tolman drove in Matt Eureste with a homer to right off of Highlanders' starter Joie Dunyon. UC Riverside cut the lead in half in their half of the third when Vince Fernandez tripled off the base of the centerfield wall and scored on a wild pitch.
The very next inning, the Highlanders (10-14) chased Ducks starter Trent Paddon following back-to-back singles from Adonis Morrison and Rubanowitz, a pair of wild pitches and a double to left center by Cody Sporrer. By the time Joe Reta took over for Paddon, it was a 3-2 UCR lead. Robby Witt greeted Reta with a single up the middle to make it 4-2 Highlanders.
Oregon tied things up in the top of the fifth, and re-gained the lead one inning later. With a pair of scores in the top seventh, the Ducks appeared to have the game in hand they faced the minimum nine Highlanders batters in the fifth, sixth and seventh.
But UC Riverside wasn't done. Tony Gudino singled up the middle to open the bottom of the eighth and was pinch run for by Casey Sheehan. Mark Contreras' double to left put runners on second and third, and Adonis Morrison was hit by a pitch loading the bases.
Rubanowitz reached on a fielder's choice as the Ducks threw home to try and cut down Sheehan at the plate, but the throw wasn't in time. One batter later, Robby Witt singled to center tying the score at seven.
The Ducks nearly ended the game in the tenth putting runners at first and third with one out, but Drake Zarate fielded a Tolman grounder and cut down Austin Grebeck at the plate, and Mark Contreras came up throwing after gathering Brandon Cuddy's single to left and threw out Scott Heineman at home.
In the bottom of the 12th, it was the Highlanders turn to nearly end the game as they loaded the bases with just one out, but Rubanowitz hit a dribbler back to the mound, bouncing in to a 1-2-3 double play.
The Ducks effectively ended the game in the next half inning, taking advantage of a pair of UC Riverside errors, scoring three runs on just one hit.
Brac Wallace (1-0) retired the Highlanders in order in the bottom of the 13th to pick up his first win of the season. Angelo Lingos (0-1) was saddled with the loss.
