Baseball Falls 10-0 At CSU Bakersfield

Box Score Bakersfield, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team traveled to Bakersfield Tuesday evening in hopes of avenging a 9-3 loss to the Roadrunners earlier in the season, but CSUB kept the Highlanders offensive off balance throughout the evening picking up a 10-0 victory.

It was a staff day for the Highlanders who sent nine pitchers to the mound, all for four outs or less. Gabe Gentner got his first start as a collegian pitching a scoreless first, and Cody Rogina did likewise in the second.

Peter Beattie (0-1) got the call in the bottom of the third, but he only lasted two batters hitting the first and walking the second. Max Compton took over for him, and after a sac bunt put Roadrunners on second and third, David Metzgar doubled to left field to make it 2-0 Bakersfield. Two batters later, Mylz Jones singled through the right side to put the 'Runners up by three.

Angelo Lingos pitched a scoreless fourth, and came out for his second inning of work in the fifth. But he hit the first batter, and wild pitched him to second before a Metzgar single to right put runners on the corners. Jordan Kron took over for Lingos striking out Soloman Williams for the first out, but the next four batters reached on three singles and a double to put CSUB up 8-0. A throwing error by Coy Sporrer allowed another runner to score, and another single made it a 10-0 game.

Jesus Gonzalez, Antonio Gonzales and Jared Morton tossed scoreless innings in the sixth, seventh and eighth, but five different Bakersfield pitchers kept the Highlanders off balance, scattering seven hits and walking three over nine innings of shutout baseball. Alec Daily (1-3) picked up his first win of the season pitching five shutout innings.

The Highlanders return to the Inland Empire this weekend for three games against UC Irvine beginning Thursday with a 6 pm PT first pitch at The Plex.
