Riverside—Cal State Fullerton had the UC Riverside Baseball Team stymied through the first 24 innings of their three-game series, outscoring the Highlanders 35-0 through the sixth inning of Sunday's game. UCR's bats came alive over the final three innings, plating four runs, but it wasn't enough as the Highlanders fell to the Titans, 7-4.
Fullerton's offense staked its pitching staff to another early lead, scoring three times in the top of the first off of UC Riverside starter Jesus Gonzalez (1-4). The Titans scored two more runs in the third and two in the fourth, to go up 7-0. The Highlanders lifted Gonzalez with one out in the fourth, eventually making five separate calls to the bullpen. Each of UCR's relief pitchers kept Cal State Fullerton (26-20, 11-4) in check, allowing just four hits over the final four and two-thirds innings.
The Highlanders (13-32, 2-13) snapped their 25-inning scoreless streak, which dated back to last Tuesday's game at UNLV, in the bottom of the seventh. Adonis Morrison began the inning with a single off of Titans' relief pitcher Miles Chambers, and tried to catch Fullerton off guard by taking the extra base. The throw from Dustin Vaught was in time, but Timmy Richards muffed the catch allowing Morrison to slide safely into second.
Mark Contreras beat out an infield single to second to put runners at the corners, and Cody Sporrer lifted a sacrifice fly to left to put the Highlanders on the board.
UC Riverside got the lead-off batter on in the bottom of the eighth as well thanks to a Joe Chavez single to right. Austin Colvin then turned on an 0-1 offering from Connor Seabold and sent it over the right field wall to make it a 7-3 game.
In the ninth, Tony Gudino laced a one-out single up the middle, and one out later moved to second on a wild pitch. Chavez doubled to deep center scoring Gudino, but Colvin grounded out to first to end the game.
John Gavin (6-1) picked up the win for Fullerton tossing five shutout innings, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out four.
The Highlanders are at home this week hosting Hawai'i for a three-game Big West Conference series beginning Thursday evening at 6 pm PT.
