PRESS-ENTERPRISE: Romario Lomeli Helping Lead UCR's Unprecedented Soccer Surge In Big West

Riverside—Judging by preseason polls and recent history, nobody saw this coming.
The UC Riverside men's soccer team is unbeaten in the Big West and in first place in the South Division while leading the conference overall with 13 points.
When this year's preseason coaches' poll was released, UCR was picked last and no one outside of Riverside was likely surprised. After all, the Highlanders finished 2-8 and in last place in their division last season and graduated their top two goal scorers and first-team all-Big West players Michael Salazar and Norberto Ochoa.
But UCR players and coaches saw something different.
"We had players who were hungry for more," goalie Vincent Morales said. "Everyone wanted to get better. As soon as we had our first practice, we knew."
