Riverside--The UC Riverside Softball Team ran its winning streak to 11 straight games Friday afternoon with a 6-4 victory over Southern Utah in the Mizuno Invitational, but fell to Boston University later in the day in a rain-shortened 4-1 decision.
UC RIVERSIDE 6, SOUTHERN UTAH 4The Thunderbirds jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one-and-a-half innings touching Highlanders starter Tayler Misfeldt for seven hits over that span. Misfeldt settled down after that giving up just two hits over the next three innings, and giving her offense time to battle its way back into the game.
Hannah Rodriguez laced a one-out single through the right side in the bottom of the second, scoring Jenae Lockwood and Chelsey Holley and slicing the Southern Utah lead to one.
The Highlanders took the lead in the very next inning plating four more runs off of T'Birds starter Haley Wall. Jenna Curtan drove in the tying run with a single to left, and Lockwood drove in the go-ahead run with a single to center. Curtan scored on the Lockwood play thanks to an error by Southern Utah's catcher, and a wild pitch brought Lockwood home.
The Thunderbirds scored a run in the top of the ninth before Kaylynn Pierce recorded the final three outs of the game for her third save of the season.
Midfeldt got credit for the win to improve to 10-4 on the season while the Highlanders ran their record to 18-6. Southern Utah fell to 3-21.
BOSTON 4, UC RIVERSIDE 1 (6 innings, rain)In the final game of day one of the Mizuno Invitational. the Highlanders were held to just four hits over five innings as Boston won its second game of the invitational, 4-1.
UC Riverside scored its lone run in the bottom of the first thanks to a hit batter, a stolen base, a sac bunt and an illegal pitch. The Terriers got the run back in the top of the second thanks to an RBI double by Gabi Martinez.
Boston took the lead in the third when a Kaitlin Sahlinger single scored Emma Wong, and tacked on insurance runs in the fourth and fifth.
Dark clouds started rolling in from right field and the wind began to pick up in the fourth. The rain finally came in the Boston half of the sixth, with the Terriers up 4-1. Play was stopped with no outs and runners on first and second, and the game was called shortly thereafter.
Pierce took the loss for UC Riverside, and is now 8-3 on the year, while the Highlanders had their 11-game winning streak snapped and fell to 18-7. Lauren Hynes got the win for Boston (6-11) to even her record at 5-5.
