Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team takes on its first opponent in a three-match week today versus Portland State at 1 pm in the SRC Tennis Center. Thursday in Hawai'i, they will take on UC Irvine in their first Big West match of 2016 at 6 pm PT and on Friday they face the Rainbow Warriors at 1 pm PT.
The Highlanders (9-9) have won seven of their last nine matches and are coming a, 5-2, victory over UConn last Sunday. Sean Yun, who has won six straight matches in no. 2 singles, was named Big West
Player of the Week.
Freshman Kyle McCann leads the team with 11 singles victories, 10 of them in the no. 3 line, while fellow freshman Anderson Ju has a 9-5 record in singles while playing in the five and six positions. McCann and Marcus Vizacarra's 7-3 doubles record at line two lead the team. Ju and redshirt senior Hans Baumstark have won four straight matches and have a 5-1 record in no. 3 doubles.
Portland State (11-3) is coming off a, 7-0, home victory in Big Sky conference competition over Southern Utah. The Vikings are on a three match winning streak and will visit two more schools on their California trip after facing the Highlanders—Point Loma Tuesday and Sacramento State Friday in conference competition.
UC Irvine (11-5) has won five in a row and Thursday's match will also be the conference opener for the Anteaters. Hawai'i was defeated in its last match by Minnesota at home, and they will take on UC Irvine Thursday morning.
UCR will be looking for its first Big West conference victory since the 2011 season, when they knocked off UC Davis 5-2 at home. (
