Riverside—The UC Riverside Softball Team won both of their games Saturday in the Highlander Classic.
In the first game of the day against Utah State, the Highlanders got a dominant pitching performance from Kaylynn Pierce, who allowed just one run on three hits and struck out a career-high 11 batters in her fourth complete game of the season.
Maddie Richard lead of the game with a single up the middle, moved to second on a Haley Harris groundout, and come around to score on Jenna Curtan one out single.
In the third, the Highlanders put two more on the board, as Curtan drove in a couple on a single up the middle, giving her three RBI's for the game.
Pierce allowed a fifth inning solo home run for the Aggies only score of the game. UCR would plate another in the sixth, when Jenae Lockwood knocked pinch runner Courtnie Ploesch, to make a 4-1 game.
In the second game of the day, UCR defeated Santa Clara in, 7-6, with a run in the bottom of the seventh for their second walk-off win of the season.
To lead off the bottom of the seventh with the scored tied, 6-6, Curtan drew a walk. Shylene Helms came to plate and laid down a sac bunt, but the throw to first base was off line, allowing her to reach and Curtan to advance to second with still nobody out.
Stephanie Tickemyer then moved the runners over with a sacrifice, before Erika Campbell stepped to the dish and deposited a 2-1 pitch into left center field. Curtan came in to score on the single fopr the walk-off victory.
Kaylynn Pierce(6-2) earned her second win of the day, this time in a relief role after come on in the sixth for Tayler Misfeldt. With two more wins today the Highlanders ran their winning streak to seven games on the season.
The Highlander Classic concludes tomorrow with first game of the day featuring Santa Clara and Utah State at 9 am, followed by the first of two games on the day for the UCR. They'll take on Utah State at 11:30 am, before the final game of the classic against Santa Clara at 2 pm.
