Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team took a 4-3 lead into the middle innings against UNLV Wednesday afternoon, but the Rebels scored one in the sixth and one in the eighth to escape with the 5-4 victory.
Highlanders (5-9) starter Max Compton gave up three runs in two-plus innings, but left the game with the scored tied at three. Michael Farris' RBI ground out to second in the bottom of the third scored Thomas Walker with the go-ahead run, and relief pitcher Cameron Haskell kept it a one-run game by giving up just one hit in his two innings of work.
He then handed the ball to Alex Fagalde who retied all three batters in the top of the fifth, but Justin Jones led off the UNLV sixth with a solo shot to right tying the score at four.
Jacob Worrell (0-2) took over in the seventh and tossed a 1-2-3 inning, but the Rebels put together what would prove to be the game-winning rally in the eighth. A pair of one out walks put two runners on, and Max Smith's double down the right field line put the Rebels on top, 5-4.
Cory Wilson then pitched two scoreless innings for UNLV (5-6) to earn his first save of the season. Ryan Hare (1-0) got the win tossing four innings of two-hit baseball, striking out five and walking two.
Vince Fernandez banged out three hits for UC Riverside, and Mark Contreras drove in a pair.
The Highlanders head to Bakersfield this weekend for a three-game series against the Road Runners.
