Softball Drops Both Games Of Double Header Versus CSUN

Riverside—The UC Riverside Softball Team dropped both games of the double header at home against Cal State Northridge Saturday. In the first game, the Matadors erupted for eight runs in the top of seventh in the, 11-1, win. Game two of the day saw the Highlander's late-inning rally fall short after the visitors put up two in the top of the seventh to claim the 3-2 win.

CSUN 11, UC Riverside 1

UCR got on the board first with a Jenae Lockwood double to left that brought in Stephanie Tickemyer in the bottom of the second.
Highlander ace, Tayler Misfeldt held the Matadors hitless until the top of the fifth inning, when her counterpart in the circle Daphne Pofek homered to left field to tie the game at one apiece.

In the top of the sixth, CSUN scored on a sacrifice fly and an illegal pitch to go ahead, 3-1. After the Highlanders went down in order in the home half of the sixth, the Matadors exploded for eight runs on five hits in the top of seventh, which included a two-run homer and a three-run shot that put the game out of reach, 11-1.

Misfeldt, who was pulled in the top of the sixth, was saddled with the loss having allowed three runs, two of them earned.

CSUN 3, UC Riverside 2

With one out in the top of the first, the Matadors scored the game's first run on a throwing error by Misfeldt that allowed Taylor Glover to come in from second and the hitter, Savannah Horvath to go to second.

The Highlanders would even the score in the bottom of the fourth, when Jenna Curtan raced home from third on a wild pitch.

CSUN would score in the top of the seventh on a soft liner that was deflected by first baseman Natalie Sanchez to Haley Harris, who stepped on bag at first and made an errant throw to the plate the allowed the run to score and the runner that was on first to move over to third. Tara Kliebenstein, who hit a three-run homer in game one, came to the plate and singled to left, bringing home Sarah Garcia for what would be the winning run.

Senior Courtnie Ploesch got the bottom of seventh started with a single up the middle. Ploesch then advanced to third on a passed ball and throwing error by the catcher attempting to get her at second. Lockwood battled the count full, before she hit a ball back up the middle, that scored Ploesch and made it a one-run game.

Shylene Helms entered the game as a pinch runner for Lockwood at first. Hannah Rodriguez, who has three walk off hits on the year, came to the plate and sharply grounded to the third baseman, who started the 5-4-3 game-ending double play.

The Highlanders will recognize seniors Erika Campbell, Courtnie Ploesch and Natalie Sanchez in a ceremony at approximately 12:45 pm before the series finale against CSUN at 1 pm.
