Box Score Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team improved to 3-1 in Big West play Friday, as Adonis Morrison's two-RBI double in the seventh broke a 1-1 tie to give the Highlanders a 3-1 victory over UC Irvine.
Austin Sodders (3-2) pitched six innings of three-hit ball to pick up his third win of the season, while Keaton Leach tossed two innings and didn't allow a hit, and Ryan Lillie recorded the final three outs for his second save of the year.
Sodders gave up a one-out triple in the top of the first to John Brontsema, and Keston Hiura's fly ball to right put the Anteaters (16-10, 1-3) up, 1-0. The junior left-hander didn't allow a single hit over his next 5.1 innings, and by that time, his offense had staked him to a two-run lead.
Three straight singles by Aaron Cisneros, Casey Worden and Austin Colvin tied the score in the top of the fourth, and the Highlanders (13-15, 3-1) took the lead for good in the seventh. Colby Schultz beat out an infield single to second with one out, and one batter later, Mark Contreras singled through the right side to put runners on first and second. Morrison followed with a double to left on the first pitch he saw to give UCR a 3-1 lead.
The 'Eaters put runners on second and third with one gone in the bottom of the ninth, but Lillie struck out Jonathan Munoz and got Alex Guenette to fly out to right field to close out the win.
UC Riverside and UC Irvine play game two of their three-game Big West Conference series on Saturday, April 9 beginning at 2 pm PT.
